Animal King
From the book “Tales of the Children’s Department Store”
One day, the animals from the stuffed animal department decided to choose a king.
Everyone agreed right away that the king of the animals should be a Lion. But which one? The problem was, there were three different lions there: the first was a real giant, the second had a loud voice and the third was small and quiet.
“The Giant Lion should be our king!” said the ancient turtle, which had been living in the stuffed animal department since the last century. ”Everyone will be scared of a king like him: the marine mammals, the tin toys, and the robot-transformers!”
So the Giant Lion became the king of the stuffed animals. He immediately shoved two elephants and three monkeys off of the top shelf (the most prestigious one), climbed up on it and proceeded to reign there with all the glory he could muster. All the other animals huddled together on the floor. They bowed down before the Lion and thought, “Now this is a true king!”
Then suddenly someone bought their king! The buyer’s name was Senya. He was six years old and very short. Senya would have never seen the Lion from behind the counter, if the Lion hadn’t climbed up so high up and wasn’t so big and great.
“We lost our king!” said the ancient turtle. “ But let’s not despair! Life goes on! The new king should be Loud Lion!”
Everyone agreed right away because they really wanted to have a king.
Loud Lion immediately started to roar loudly:
“R-r-r-r-o-o-o-o-a-a-a-a-r-r!” He was so loud that not only did all the stuffed animals quiet down, but also the marine mammals, the tin soldiers, and the robot-transformers. Even the toy guns stopped shooting, and the tanks stopped buzzing. Two clerks fainted, and in the director’s office, the big oak table shuddered.
The stuffed animals were looking at Loud Lion and thinking, “Now this is a real tsar!”
At that moment, Vasya walked into the Children’s Department Store. He was wearing earphones, but he heard the Lion right away, he was roaring so loudly! Of course Vasya immediately bought him. He loved everything loud.
The poor animals! It took them a while to recover from such a horrible loss. Many cried, and everyone knows damp is very bad for stuffed animals. Then the ancient Turtle said,
“Don’t cry, stuffed animals, for we still have a third Lion. Though he is small and quiet, he’s still a Lion.”
And so, Small and Quiet Lion became the animal king. He was very humble. He never pushed himself to the front and stayed hidden behind the backs of the elephants and the hippos. Shoppers didn’t notice him, and he so reigned on and on in the stuffed animal department. He still reigns there. Why do you think the animals behave, don’t argue, don’t fight or go to war with the robots? Because they know: somewhere close by there is a king, unobtrusive and quiet…
But if one of you kids finds the Small and Quiet Lion in the stuffed animal department and, better still, buys him, I’ll be honest with you, he will be very happy. Being a king is pretty nice, but being a beloved stuffed animal is way better. I hear the they are planning to deliver a new batch of lions to the department soon, seven or even eight of them!
