Маяки
С древних времён люди строят башни, на вершине которых зажигают сигнальные огни. Это маяки. Маяки предупреждают моряков об опасных рифах и коварных течениях, помогают кораблям прокладывать курс или заходить в гавань.
Маяк — самая высокая точка на побережье. Во время грозы в него может ударить молния, поэтому шпиль башни является громоотводом. Если маяк стоит в открытом море, он служит и домом смотрителя, и складом топлива.
Главное помещение маяка — фонарный отсек. В старину в фонарном отсеке зажигали огонь. Сейчас там установлен прожектор. Прожектор вращается, и моряки издалека видят вспышки света.
Если видимость плохая, с маяка подается звуковой сигнал. Раньше для звуковых сигналов использовали гонг, колокол или пушку. Сейчас с маяка звучит сирена-ревун.
Маяки появились в далекой древности. Один из самых древних маяков стоял неподалёку от легендарной Трои, на берегу пролива Дарданеллы. Другой известный маяк — Александрийский — был построен в III веке до нашей эры на острове Фарос (его иногда называют Фаросским). Александрийский маяк считался одним из семи чудес Древнего мира. Он простоял почти два тысячелетия, пока его не разрушили землетрясения.
Строительство маяков развернулось в XVIII веке. В это время стала активно развиваться мировая торговля, и все больше кораблей с грузами пересекало Атлантический океан.

Lighthouses
Since ancient times, people have been building towers, on top of which they light up signaling fires. Those towers are known as lighthouses. Lighthouses warn sailors about dangerous reefs and deceptive currents, and help ships map out their way or sail into harbor.
A lighthouse is the tallest point on the coast. During a storm, it can be struck by lightning, so the spike on the top of the tower is a lightning conductor. If a lighthouse is located in the open sea, it serves as the caretaker’s home and as storage for fuel.
The main part of a lighthouse is the light compartment. In the old days, people would light a fire inside of the light compartment. Now, it contains a projector. The projector rotates in a circle, and sailors see the flashes of light from far away.
If conditions are poor and people can’t see the light, the lighthouse gives off a sound signal. Earlier, a gong, bell, or cannon was used to create the signal. Currently, lighthouses create the noise with a siren.
Lighthouses were first created an extremely long time ago. One of the most ancient lighthouses stood near the legendary Troy, on the bank of the Dardanelles strait. Another famous lighthouse, the Alexandria lighthouse, was built in the third century B.C. on Pharos island (sometimes called the Pharos of Alexandria). The Alexandria lighthouse was considered to be one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It stood for almost two thousand years until it was destroyed by earthquakes.
The construction of lighthouses really unfolded in the XVIII century. During that time, world trade started actively developing, and more goods-carrying ships crossed the Atlantic Ocean.
