Birds: Heavy and Light
Even if we had wings, we couldn’t fly. We’re too heavy. Geese (from the top of their beak to the tip of their tail) and six-year-olds are the same height, but the six-year-old weighs the same as five geese!
Swans are the same length as an adult male, but six times as light.
The lightest bird in the world, the hummingbird-bee, weighs as much as a nickel.
The heaviest bird in the world, the ostrich, weighs one hundred kilograms, like a very large male human. The ostrich doesn’t fly.
The heaviest flying bird – the bustard, weighs 20 kilogram.
The heaviest flying bird used to be Argentavis. It weighed half an ostrich and its wingspan was the height of a giraffe. It went extinct.
