King of Beasts
From the book "Tales of Toyland"
One day, the animals from the department of plush toys decided to choose themselves a king.
They all agreed that the king of beasts should be a lion. But which lion? The thing is, there were three lions in the department of plush toys. The first one was very big, the second had the loudest voice, and the third was small and quiet.
"Our king should be the biggest lion!" said the old turtle, who had arrived at the store in the last century. "Everyone would fear such a king: the bath toys, the tin ones, and even the robot transformers!"
That's how the biggest lion became the king of plush toys. Right away, he shoved two elephants and three monkeys off the top shelf (the most prestigious one), climbed onto it, and started to reign with all his grandeur. The rest of the animals crowded on the floor underneath the shelf. They bowed to the big lion, and thought, "He is a real king!"
And then the king was bought! The boy who bought him was Senya. He was six years old, and very short. Senya would never have noticed the lion from behind the counter, if the latter hadn't climbed so high and been so big and grand.
"We have lost our king!" said the old turtle. "But let us not despair! Life will go on! The new king can be the lion with the loudest voice!"
Everyone agreed, because they really wanted to have a king.
Right away, the lion with the loudest voice roared very loudly:
"Roar!", so loudly, that not only all the plush toys got quiet, but also the bath toys, the tin ones, and the robot transformers. Even the toy guns stopped shooting, and the tanks stopped beeping. Two saleswomen fainted, and the big oak desk in the manager's office started shivering.
The plush toys were looking at the loud lion and thinking, "He is a real king!"
That very moment, Vasya entered the toy store. He was wearing headphones, but he heard the roar anyways, since the lion was so loud. Of course, Vasya bought him right away - he liked loud things.
The poor animals! It took them a while to get over such a loss. Many were crying, and moisture is very bad for the health of plush toys. And then, the old turtle said, "Don't cry, my dear friends, we still have another lion. He might be small and quiet, but he is still a lion."
That was how the small, quiet lion became the king of beasts. He was also very shy. He never jumped in in front of others and never peeked out from behind the elephants and hippopotamuses. Customers didn't notice him, and he kept on reigning at the department of plush toys. He reigns there to this very day. And why do you think all the animals are so well behaved, not arguing, not fighting, not going to war against the robots? Because they know, somewhere nearby there is a king, inconspicuous and quiet...
But to tell you the truth, if one of you children discovers that small and quiet lion in the department of plush toys, and then buys him, the lion will be very happy. It is good to be a king, but being a favorite plush toy is even better. And don't worry about the department of plush toys. I've heard, they're getting a new batch of lions - seven of them, maybe even eight.
